I was doing some research and testing on Windows 2008 security and audit logging capabilities and wanted to share these resources for you Opsmgr administrators that may be have need for some of this information for use with Audit Collection Services.

Here are some great resources to get you familiar with Windows 2008 security events and granular audit policy configuration.

  • Windows 2008 Audit and Compliance - This TechNet Magazine article is a great introduction to auditing capabilities of Windows 2008 and configuration of Granular Audit Policies (GAP).
  • Security Audit Events for Win2008 and Vista - Here’s a great list of Windows 2008 Security Event IDs and descriptions. You’ll notice that Win2008 events are nearly identical to Windows Vista, and you’ll see these in the EventSchema.xml
  • SVT Audit Reference List - If you have interested in matching Windows 2008 event IDs to their legacy counterparts, Secure Vantage folks took some info from MS and ultimatewindowssecurity.com to reference some of the legacy event IDs next to their Windows 2008 equivalents.

Part 6: Xian Policy Templates

by Roberto Alcocer

For System Center Forum readers that might have missed our first blog posts, this is Jalasoft’s sixth article about Xian Io’s functionality in a series of eight. Prior posts discussed the monitoring of network device interfaces, port status, a device’s response time, asynchronous monitoring, the monitoring of processes and distributed applications with Xian Io.

As we saw on earlier posts, monitoring a network device with Xian is a simple task that consists on discovering it by providing its IP address and SNMP community string and then applying one or several rules to immediately start monitoring it and receiving counters and alerts on OpsMgr 2007.

The problem starts when you have already discovered several devices and need to manually apply similar rules to all of them; moreover, imagine that after adding all these rules to all your devices, you find out that one of the parameters you provided your rules with, such as the schedule, is wrong or has to be modified. Then to fix this error, you would have to manually edit one by one all these rules. Finally, what if you had another environment with similar devices and you wanted to apply the same policy (list of rules with specific parameters) that you previously defined to these devices? Most likely you will have to write down the list of rules and their parameters on a piece of paper and then start with the same manual procedure, hopping that you will not need to modify or correct anything afterwards.

Solution:

Xian Io Network Manager implemented a mechanism by defining policy templates that will allow network administrators to save valuable time. These policy templates contain a predefined list of rules which you can apply to one or several devices at once and that you can link to your devices. So by changing a parameter on the template, you are automatically modifying it on all the rules applied to your devices. It is also possible to import and export any policy template that you defined. To get a better idea of this features’ functionality let’s take a look at creating, applying, editing, importing and exporting policy templates in Xian Io:

Creating a policy template

  1. Open the Xian Io console and then click on the ‘Policy Templates’ button.
  2. Select any device category, such as ‘Cisco switches’, then right click over the folder and finally click on the ‘New’ context menu option. The following dialog will be displayed:

  1. On the ‘Policy template properties’ dialog, define a name for your policy and a description.
  2. Double click on any desired rule listed on the left tree list, its configuration wizard will be displayed, then provide all the parameters, such as threshold, severity level of the alert to be sent to OpsMgr, the schedule, etc. and then click on the ‘Finish’ button so that the rule will be now displayed on the right side of the ‘Policy template properties’ dialog.
  3. Repeat the previous step for all the rules that you want to define for this policy template.
  4. Click on the ‘OK’ button to save these changes and close the dialog.

Applying a policy template

If you want to apply a policy template to just one device, you can simply follow these steps:

  1. Open the Xian Io console.
  2. Right click over the desired device and then click on the ‘apply policy template’ context menu option.

  1. On the confirmation dialog, make sure that the ‘Link the device with the policy template’ checkbox is selected and then click on the ‘Yes’ button.

If you want to apply a policy template to several devices at the same time, just perform this simple procedure:

  1. Open the Xian Io console.
  2. Click on the ‘Policy Templates’ button.
  3. Select the policy template you want to apply to your devices from the tree view displayed at the left side of the Xian Io console.
  4. Right click on the policy template and then click on the ‘Apply’ context menu option.
  5. Select all the devices you want to apply the template to and then click on the ‘OK’ button.

  1. As in the previous case, verify that the ‘Link the device with the policy template’ checkbox is selected on the confirmation dialog box.

Editing a policy template

If after creating and applying your policy template you find that there is a need for adding, removing or modifying the settings of any rules, you only need to access the policy template, perform the necessary modifications and then propagate the changes to all the rules running on your devices and that are linked to the templates:

  1. Open the Xian Io console and click on the ‘Policy Templates’ button.
  2. Double click on the template you want to modify so the ‘Policy template properties’ dialog will be displayed and you will be able to add new rules, remove current rules or modify them by double clicking on any desired rule displayed on the list at the right.

  1. Once you have performed the desired changes, click on the ‘OK’ button.
  2. On the confirmation dialog, select the checkbox that states ‘Overwrite customized parameter(s) on the monitoring elements with the policy template configuration?’ and then click on the ‘Yes’ button.

Importing and exporting policy templates

In order to facilitate the migration from one environment to another, Xian Network Manager Io provides the user with the Import/Export functionality for Policy Templates. This allows you to export policy templates found in one server to a different server, saving you from having to recreate the policy templates in the servers that you want migrate to. Just follow these simple steps to export/import policy templates:

Exporting:

  1. Open the Xian Io console and click on the ‘Policy Templates’ button.
  2. Right click on the policy template you want to export and then click on the ‘Export’ context menu option.

  1. Provide the name and location of the file you are exporting the template to and then click on ‘Save’.

Importing:

  1. Open the Xian Io console and click on the ‘Policy Templates’ button.
  2. Right click on the policy templates category where you want to import the policy template to and then click on the ‘Import’ option, look for the policy template file and then click on the ‘Open’ button.

As a result, Xian Io’s Linked Policy Templates feature allows you to have a predefined list of rules functioning on the network devices/servers of your choice in a matter of minutes and with little effort.

SCVMM vNext: Microsoft takes at aim at VMware in the battle for virtualization supremacy

The next release of System Center Virtual Machine Manager (currently  dubbed “SCVMM vNext”) aims to consolidate management of virtual machines from multiple platforms and sources (VS 2005, VMware 3.x, and Xen in a future release). But to really win the war in the end, I believe MS needs to target the following key areas:

  1. DR / HA - MS currently has no true  VMotion equivalent today. Addressing disaster recovery scenarios is definitely a key area. Check out the High Availability with Hyper-V webcast.
  2. Performance - By some estimates I’ve seen, VMware outperforms Virtual Server 2005 by 15-20%. We’ll see how far Windows 2008 cuts into that.
  3. Make virtualization accessible for the mid-market - Virtualization has found it’s way into shops as small as 35 users amongst my clients, but the VMware mgmt interfaces (and let’s face it, virtualization concepts in general) are tough for IT generalists to grasp. Delivering a better mouse-trap to this market is critical for adoption.
  4. Appliances - With the release of 3i, VMware enterered the world of plug-and-play virtualization with minimal user knowledge of necessary configuration items. This would no doubt ease deployment not only in mid-market, but branch office deployment in the enterprise space.

Client Monitoring: What is an Information Worker anyway?

  Posted by: Pete

Think about this for a minute. Do you know who these people are? And what about Knowledge Workers, and Data Entry Workers? And what is the secret handshake for each group?

An answer doesn’t roll right off your tongue, does it? How can you deploy the Information Worker Management Pack if you don’t know what an information worker is? So I went looking for a good explanation of these terms, and turned up a nice post from Mark Bower at Microsoft.

As it turn out, information works seem to be just about every worker with a computer on their desktop! Read Mark’s explanation below:

When we use the term Information Worker, this isn’t simply another name for Knowledge Worker.  Information Worker is the superset of 3 classes of workers with different information and technology usage characteristics.

  • The Knowledge Worker
    • Works with ideas and manages teams
    • Wants to be able to develop and improve processes and forms; encourage collaboration; create workspace environments
    • Needs to create, consume, transform and analyse data
    • Works in an unstructured, free-form way, maybe starting with a set of ideas which are collaborated on and built into a new document/report/form/business process.
    • Examples of this type of worker include middle/senior managers, consultants, marketing execs.
  • The Structured Task Worker
    • Unlike the Knowledge Worker they tend to work only with data and information, not ideas.
    • Create and consume, but don’t transform or manage information
    • Needs to be able to find facts quickly; create documents; Edit, write & process information
    • According to some reports this category of Information Worker makes up 80% of the user base in most organisations.
    • Examples of this type of user include bank clerk, call centre operator, nurse and people in supervisor roles: Shop Manager, Bank Manager, Nursing Supervisor.
  • The Data Entry Worker
    • Create and consume, but don’t transform or manage information
    • Wants easy access to information; Standardised process and forms; list management
    • Doesn’t tend to do free-form document creation
    • This type of user typically works in some kind of administrative, secretarial or receptionist role.

Time to get moving on that Information Worker MP.

Monitoring the Availability of a Device and its Response Time

By Roberto Alcocer

For System Center Forum readers that might have missed our first blog post of February 4th, this is Jalasoft’s second article about Xian Io’s functionality in a series of eight. We tried to come up with solutions to problems that most Network Administrators encounter on a daily basis, so our topic selected for this occasion is the monitoring of a device’s availability and response time.

Unfortunately, most network problems are caused by a device or computer that is down or due to delays on the response time of network devices; therefore, knowing immediately if any of your machines is not available or is becoming bottlenecked in terms of response time, is one of the most important and basic network administration tasks.

Xian Network Manager Io offers a simple but powerful mechanism to monitor these aspects for all your network devices and computers. This mechanism lets you know immediately if any of your devices went down and also allows you to monitor their response time to prevent any future problems. Let’s take a look at the Xian Io for Ops Mgr 07 Device Availability smart management pack (SMP):

Discovering a device:

The Xian Io device availability SMP will let you discover virtually any computer, device, machine or even a website that has its own IP address, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Open the Xian console.
  2. Go to the ‘Device > Add’ menu.
  3. Select the ‘availability’ plug-in and then click on the ‘OK’ button. A discovery rule wizard will be displayed.
  4. Click on the ‘Parameters’ tab.
  5. Select if you want to discover just one device or several ones under a subnet or within a network range.
  6. Provide the IP address(es) of the device(s) you want to discover.
  7. Provide the proper timeout and number of retries parameters.
  8. You can leave the ‘active rules options’ and ‘Network Manager Server’ tabs with the default values and then click on the ‘Finish’ button.

To see all your discovered ‘availability’ devices, simply click on the ‘Views’ button and then double click on the ‘Network > Standard views >Availability’ folder.

Configuring the ‘ICMP Availability’ rule:

Once you have discovered a device, you should add an ‘ICMP availability’ rule to it. This rule will monitor both the ICMP availability and response time, granting you the possibility of generating independent alerts and counters. This rule may be configured to consider the device “not available” after a number of failed connection retries and consequently generate an alert on Ops Mgr 07. In a similar way, the ICMP availability rule can send an alert to Ops Mgr 07 if the device’s response time is greater than a predefined threshold. Finally, this rule can constantly gather performance counters so you may later generate the proper reports on Ops Mgr 07.

To add and configure this rule simply follow the procedure below:

  1. Open the Xian console.
  2. Right click on any desired ‘availability’ device and then click on the ‘add rule to execute’ context menu option.
  3. Select the ‘Available rules > General > ICM availability’ rule and then click ‘OK’. The rule configuration wizard will be displayed.
  4. Click on the ‘Active rule options’ tab and set the maximum number of times Xian will try to contact the device before considering it is down and also provide a specific name for the rule.
  5. Click on the ‘ICMP availability parameters’ tab and:
    1. Check the ‘Verify ICMP availability’ checkbox and provide the proper max. retries and timeout parameters.
    2. Check the ‘Alerts’ checkbox and select the severity level of the alert that will be sent to Ops Mgr 07 if the device is not available.
    3. If you also want to collect performance counters to be available on the Ops Mgr 07 console and for reports, you can check the ‘Collect ICMP availability counters’ checkbox.
    4. Check the ‘Consider device not available when it is not accessible through ICMP and disable it’ checkbox.
  6. Click on the ‘ICMP response time parameters’ tab and:
    1. Check the ‘generate alerts when value is above threshold’ checkbox and define the response time threshold and the severity of the alert that will be displayed on the Ops Mgr 07 console if the response time of the device is greater than the defined threshold.
    2. Check the ‘Collect response time counters’ checkbox if you want to be able to generate the proper response time performance graphs and reports on Ops Mgr 07.
  7. Click on the ‘Schedule’ tab and configure the following:
    1. Normal schedule: You can define the interval of the rule execution (for example 5 minutes)
    2. Not available schedule: If Xian encounters that the device is not available, this rule can run with a different schedule so it will be more accurate determining the moment the device is available again.
  8. Click on the ‘Finish’ button.

After performing these configurations, Xian will monitor the availability and response time of your devices and computers and you will be able to generate reports like the following ones:

Sample Reports

We hope that you find this article helpful. If you have any questions or comments please reply to this post, and we’ll make sure to send you an answer as soon as possible. For further information on Xian Io for Ops Mgr 07 please visit our website http://www.jalasoft.com/.

Securing Report Access in Operations Manager 2007

  Posted by: Pete

I think at this point in time, most Ops Mgr admins don’t think report visibility can be restricted at a granularity beyond the default Report Operators group. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. In reality, visibility to Operations Manager reports can be restricted to custom Report Operator user roles at the folder level, or even the individual report level in Operatoins Manager 2007….but not through the Operations Console GUI.

Working with Microsoft PSS to solve this issue for a customer, Mike Betts (www.momanswers.net) has successfully naviagated these waters, and through a mix of GUI, Powershell and reporting site configuration, and has kindly shared his documentation and explanation of the process for securing and restricting visibility Ops Mgr reports.

Download Mike’s tutorial at the URL below:

Did you know? Mike Betts was the 1st MOM MVP when MOM 2000 was released by Microsoft.

Xian IO for Operations Manager 2007 RC2

  Posted by: Pete
Categories: ISV, News, Operations Manager 2007, Uncategorized
  Comments: None

Xian announced the RC2 release of their offering designed to enhance Ops Mgr non-Windows and network monitoring capabilities (RTM expected next week). With the recent purchase of Engyro by Microsoft (and subsequent removal of their products from the market), Xian now stands virtually alone in this sector of the ISV space (with eXc as the only mainstream competitor with widespread traction in this arena). While Xian does offer VMware ESX monitoring in this suite as well, I want to differentiate that category, as that category has it’s own, interesting story….more on that another time.

With Microsoft making a clear move in their intended direction for heterogeneous monitoring and product connectors, it would now seem only the strong will survive in an ISV space where additional acquisition by MS would now seem much less likely, but one with fewer players than one may have initially envisioned given the attention. Xian makes a strong case here in that they have a broad product offering which should ultimately strengthen their position in the large enterprise space targeted by Operations Manager.

Overall, this is a nice product. While there are a couple of areas where I hope to see improvement in future releases (built-in knowledge and de-coupling their architecture from the mgmt server), they’ve added some very useful functionality that should reduce administrative effort, allowing administrators to create ‘templates’ of a fashion containing base rulesets for a given object type. I also find their console fairly intuitive and performant (as well as virtualization friendly). I havn’t seen the final retail prices yet, so I cannot speak to price at this time. We’ll definitely complete a full product review with some comparative analysis at some point in the future.

In any event, the Xian team are a group of good folks working very hard to deliver a good product strengthening the heterogeous story for Operations Manager. I encourage you check into for yourself. You can learn more about Xian IO for Ops Mgr 2007 at the URL below.

This title offers more guidance on MOM 2005 design than any other, and is designed for use as a deployment aid. Numerous step-by-step examples guide the reader through configuration of server and management pack settings. Additionally, the book gives some time to 3rd party management pack offerings, and monitoring in heterogeneous environments. Some will complain does lack continuity to a degree, a fact that makes it quite apparent this book was authored by mulitple invidivuals. In the end, it is a useful reference with considerable guidance for the beginning to intermediate MOM 2005 administrator.
